We are currently experiencing significant increases in air freight bookings ex China, resulting in increasingly tight airline capacity and challenges securing space on preferred flights.
While airlines are generally still accepting bookings, many are overselling available capacity, resulting in shipments being rolled over and delayed from their original flight schedules. Larger consignments are also being split across multiple flights to accommodate the increased volumes.
Although seasonal increases are not unusual at this time of year, several factors are contributing to the current pressure on capacity, including:
- The resumption of normal shipping activity following China’s Golden Week holidays.
- Australian retailers preparing for successive major sales events, including Click Frenzy, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
- The traditional peak air freight season in the lead-up to Christmas.
Rates and booking considerations
Another key challenge is securing firm air freight rates. While bookings can be requested in advance, rates remain fluid, particularly when cargo is not scheduled to fly within a few days of the initial booking request. Pricing and available capacity can change quickly as airlines manage demand.
The SCC team is working closely with our partners in China to secure the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for your air freight requirements, while managing capacity constraints and potential schedule changes.
How you can help
To give us the best opportunity to secure space, competitive rates and the most suitable flight options, we ask that you involve SCC in your air freight planning and communications as early as possible.
Early visibility of upcoming shipments will allow our team to assess available options and work with our China partners to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding during this busy peak season.
