New Khapra Beetle Controls

6th July, 2021

Clients are reminded that the Department of Agriculture’s (DOA) Phase 6A of the urgent khapra beetle actions commence on 12 July.

Khapra Beetle has emerged as Australia’s number two priority plant pest. Second only to the all too familiar Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB).

Khapra’s origins and its tendency to inhabit containers rather than products has required DOA to put a different set of controls in place for Khapra to those that apply to BMSB.

These measures require the mandatory off shore treatment of FCL/FCX sea containers in two circumstances:

  1. The container is to be packed with high risk plant products in a khapra beetles target risk country.
  2. The container is to be packed with any type of goods in a khapra target risk country and is to be unpacked in a rural grain growing area.

High Risk Plant Products are listed here https://www.agriculture.gov.au/pests-diseases-weeds/plant/khapra-beetle/urgent-actions#highrisk-plant-products

Khapra Beetle Target Risk Countries are listed here https://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/arrival/pests/khapra_beetle

Post Codes can be checked here to see if they are considered in a rural grain growing area https://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/online-services/delivery-postcode/summary
